Edward Burtynsky, fotógrafo canadiense, es un autor poco conocido en Europa pero cuyo rigor conceptual han hecho de él uno de los fotógrafos más apreciados en el momento actual del panorama americano.
Su obra se encuadra en la tradición americana de la fotografía de paisaje, que intenta captar la grandiosidad de los escenarios naturales, al tiempo que su decadencia a manos del hombre.

Burtynsky no es un autor que persiga esa naturaleza intacta en la que se refugian los clásicos del medio sino que traslada la nostalgia de su mirada, cargada de un cierto sentido romántico, a los efectos de la acción del hombre sobre ella. Sin duda, los pioneros del XIX y, sobre todo, Edward Weston, ejercen una influencia directa en su obra, pero su fotografía busca la relación entre el hombre y la naturaleza y las evidencias del pasado del primero en la segunda. Las líneas de ferrocarril que atraviesan el continente americano, cortando los profundos valles de las montañas Rocosas, las explotaciones mineras y, posteriormente, los astilleros hindúes, han ido plasmando la relación de Burtynsky con el género del paisaje y la naturaleza.
La suya es una mirada romántica, que asiste al final de algo. El título escogido para la primera de estas series, "railcuts" indica lo alejadas que se encuentran sus imágenes de un proyecto meramente estético que sitúa el tema entre lo sublime y lo pintoresco. Las diferencias de proporciones entre la ladera de la montaña y el minúsculo tren que las atraviesa señalan, a un tiempo, la magnitud del elemento natural y su profanación por la tecnología.
En los últimos años, Edward Burtynsky ha desarrollado su trabajo en Asia, donde fotografió los astilleros de Chittagong, en Bangladesh, y la mastodontica construcción de la presa de la Tres Grangantas, el gran proyecto hidroeléctrico del gobierno chino.
